Ajay Dhapa leads us back into the bylanes of Jamnagar, to Navivasi, the locality where he grew up, shaped by everyday rituals of coexistence.
In this multi-religious neighbourhood, where doors stayed open and lives overlapped without ceremony, Dhapa absorbed a world held together by trust, a currency more valuable than anything minted.
His paintings trace this terrain with the precision of memory. Floral carpet motifs stretch across the canvas like old maps, marking territories not of empire but of kinship and shared ground. Upon them, miniature-style figures—part observation, part recollection—move through scenes of humour, affection, and the subtle negotiations of daily life.
Dhapa invites us to enter these spaces much as one would step into a lived archive: slowly, attentive to detail, alert to the silent ties that bind a community.
At the heart of his work lies a truth as enduring as any chronicle: places survive not through power or proclamation, but through trust freely given and returned.
